says Hefe Yes!

I’m adding this review a little late in the game, but then again that’s how life is sometimes.

The Hefe I had came from the Groveland Tap, which carries ALL Summit products.  Our tasting was September 29th, well into Fall and out of HefeWeizen season.  Not surprising, We could definitely taste the difference with this beer.  The typical refreshing phenolic fermentation character had turned to a slight sharp clovey tang.  My Hefe was served with a lemon slice, which was just right to balance against the phenolic bite.  Also present were intense orange and citrus notes, and a slight banana flavor and aroma.

We are pretty lucky to have a local brewer with the guts to present us with such an authentic interpretation of this beer.  My hats off to this Summit beer!

This beer is pretty much exactly what you might expect it to be. A great wheat style, with summit’s signature hoppiness. The only thing that threw me for a loop was how very filtered this beer is. Most hefeweizens I’ve had are unfiltered, as if to prove how very wheaty they are. I’m not saying that’s a drawback, merely an observation. What makes this hefeweizen so good is the bitterness from the hops covers the sugars of the wheat. It’s so balanced, and so incredible on a hot day. (especially after softball on tap) Summit done did it. I wish they would sell it bottled outside of the variety pack…if they do, please let me know.

Hefeweizens rate in my top 5 favorite brews. I was able to justify drinking them all year long in San Diego, so I had alot of them. This is one of my favorites. Well balanced, without the overpowering cloves that many have, and not needing a lemon to hide overpowering sweetness. Summit, I heart you.

This beer became a new favorite for me this summer. I’ve been drinking it for quite some time, but I don’t think I fully appreciated it until recently. It pours a nice cloudy pale yellow with a rocky white head. I smell bread and weizen yeast, a bit of clove and some bubblegum. Much of the same comes through in the flavor – a decent yeasty profile with equal parts clove and banana. Ever-so-slightly tart. Yum. This beer is an easy, easy drinker. Definitely a new summer favorite.

Yes, summery. I’ve taken to drinking wheat beers with a spritz of lemon in place of orange juice for breakfast. It’s a summer thing. Winter, I don’t bother getting out of bed.I like this stuff. Very refreshing. Not a beer staple (wheat beers give me gas), but a beer to mark summer occasions.Makes me want to kick back on the porch at sunset to watch the sun set. Which makes me wish I had a porch. And makes me wish my apartment’s view wasn’t dominated by other apartments. So point me to the nearest wading pool.

I am not a big fan of the summer brews but even I have to admit that Summit’s Hefe is a good beer. This also seems like the perfect week to test this type of beer since it’s the hottest of the year so far.

The Hefeweizen is a light beer with a foggy, unfiltered look to it. The citrus flavors are enough to liven up the taste without overpowering. A great beer to enjoy outside on a hot summer day.
