Brewer's Description
Before golden lagers existed, the most popular beer in Germany was a brown lager simply known as Dunkel. The Dunkel was the first beer to be regulated by the Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516. It thus became Germany's first standardized lager beer style, the forerunner of virtually all major beer styles made in Germany today.
Our recipe which is based on a Munich Dunkel from 1867. It is a deep copper color with a reddish tine. Medium bodied, rich and malty with hints of canilla and chocolate.

We went to the Happy Gnome to try the Schell 1867 Munich Dunkel, which they said they had. I tried to order the beer off the menu but the server corrected me, saying that the Dunkel was coming next, after the current keg of whatever they had was gone. There was a few minutes of confusion and discussion and now I’m not sure if I had the beer or not. My beer was from Schell’s and it was dark in color. This is all I know. I’m gonna roll with that for now.
