I have to agree with Joe Lunchpail on this one. Premo always has a place in my “heart” but I don’t go searching for it. Some of the northern MN bars don’t carry much else so it’s nice that it’s always a standby when I’m up visiting the folks, but I’m not in love with the lighter, cheaper taste.

I spent most of the winter working in the Grain Belt Studios in the old bottling house next to the brewery and it seemed downright weird to drink anything but Primo while we were there. Now, when I’m feeling overwhelmed at Surdyk’s and can’t think what to buy, I fall back on the Grain Belt. It’s perfect for summer – light, refreshing, tasty. It’s not too tasty, though. Not distinctive enough to get sick of. Best of all, you can get twelve bottles for less than ten bucks. Great for nights on the porch, barbeques, and yard work.

I loved this one instantly. Nice and creamy and sweet, which are features I enjoy in a beer, but I generally prefer the dark variety, like oatmeal stouts and milkshake stouts. This one captures those flavors well, but is so much lighter! Nice smooth finish. I was literally gulping it.

In a Flat Earth pint glass (too lazy to search the cabinet for a proper pilsner glass), it’s a clear golden color, lovely white head, starts proud and slips down in size. Flowery aroma, and the hops are happening, clean and level headed.Drinking it…smooth, even, mild, and watery. Tidy bitter smack from the Hallertau hops right up, and then they slide back and merge with the water and disappear down the throat without a thought. Hops return with each sip and enjoy a nice visit on the palate each time. Light bodied, easy drinking, and right on for style. Almost perfect. And I’m no huge fan of lagers or pilsners, but this suits just fine. Haiku #7: Czech town of Plzn / birthplace of clear, golden beer / look what you started!

This might be my new favorite beer. It had just the right balance of light favors. Clean and simple equals tasty.

I shared a bottle of Cygnus X-1 with my friend Kase as I got to meet his new baby Miles tonight. Both the beer and the baby were quite enjoyable. I would also describe both as light, Miles because he’s a 7 lb baby, and the beer because despite the creamy flavor it felt crisp and light in my mouth. The similarities end there for I did not taste the baby, much to Kase’s relief. I will definitely be having more of this beer, and I hope to be invited back to see Miles again.

I will admit I have a fairly unsophisticated beer palette–which might be the reason why I enjoyed this beer. Because of the rich color, I was expecting a more powerful flavor. Maybe it was the honey, but it tasted much lighter than it appeared. However, this beer didn’t have anything special to offer, that is anything a miller lite or any standard light beer can’t provide so I probably wouldn’t buy it again.
