While I’m not out slashin’ police cruiser tires and protesting, I am taking part in an even better aspect of this year’s RNC. The Convention Ale is a well carbonated, reddish hued beer with an excellent malt to hop balance. I can’t tell much by the aroma, but the taste is subtle and smooth. A very light malt flavor that doesn’t linger on the buds for too long, you don’t have to be a beer aficionado to appreciate this beer’s craftsmanship. Once again, the St. Paul water is doing it for me. I don’t even care if it’s daughter is knocked up or not, Flat Earth is bound to steal some votes with this one. Three cheers, four stars.

I had a great time at the Ugly Mug, although there was definitely a lot of room for improvement in the service. I’m never able to relax until I know my beer is at least on it’s way, and after waiting for about 10 minutes as the server passed us up multiple times, I just went to the bar.

Whatever, the beer was tasty, and at $2.50 a pint it was a great deal. It was also fun to hear first hand from Jeff all about the beer and how they taste-tested many different concentrations, ending up with the 25/1 beer to coffee ratio. Oh and I should mention that even though the server was non-existent, we did manage to order some food. It was bountiful, we must have had 5 enormous chicken tenders, only they were actually full chicken breasts, and the mini hamburgers were more like quarter pounders. I’d go back, but I’d sit at the bar.

The mildly hoppy aroma complements the hints of clove flavoring quite well. The taste lingers on your tongue long enough to be enjoyable without being overdone. Not overly hoppy, just enough to let you know they’re present, but not enough to have to do the roof of the mouth/tongue smack thing. It’s not a beer that I would typically buy, but I’m glad that I joined Brew 52, otherwise I would probably have never just picked one up.

By the end of the bottle, the spice-y aftertaste begins to take hold. I wonder how my breath smells to other people after drinking this? By the way, the guy on the bottle reminds me of a lot of the empty suits I see walking in the skyway during lunch hour. Classic. Re: the bottles being too big? I disagree. Just better for sharing the wealth, though my girlfriend didn’t like it much. Oh well, more for me I guess. Things could be far worse.

I can’t quite figure out what it is with this beer, and it’s been the same with the other Flat Earth beers: Close, but not quite what they’re presumably shooting for. And not quite what I’d be eager to drink again.

I know I want more body, more flavor and more finish from a barley wine. I don’t know. I feel kind of bad slagging it, ’cause it sounds like the brewers are decent folk.

I guess it left me uninspired. Thus, probably the dullest review I’ve ever written on here…

I certainly don’t think anyone would recommend Hostel Part 2, which is what we watched last night while I drank my Warlock. But I definitely think over-the-top horror is the right genre. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Descent, or even Hostel Part 1, would be good. Not just because of the name Warlock, but because you need a 9%+ alcohol drink to make it through one of these. What do you think Jeff?
