I can’t say too much for or against this one. It was a smooth drinking stout for sure but it was a bit watered-down for my taste. C’est la vie – wouldn’t stop me from trying it again.

Only in a less descriptive manner. I liked it, despite also having had some poor experiences with Brau beers in the past. This is a very drinkable beer and can be enjoyed by those that normally wrinkle their noses at the sound of the word “Stout”.

Enough. I’ve had a bottle of Whirly Bird sitting in my fridge for about four weeks. No more delays. I drank it, and enjoyed it. It’s not as heavy as Lake Superior’s oatmeal stout, but has just as much bite. I ate oatmeal in the morning and drank the beer at night – a nice way to close the loop on the day. Bonus: the label for this one is by far my favorite of all the Braus.

Thanks to Heritage Liquor in Maplewood for having this before I was even looking for it. I’ll save the Pale Ale for some other day.

Brau Brother’s Whirly Bird was not at Surdyk’s as of June 16th, so Becca got a 6-pack of the Pale Ale. Never before have I had a beer with such a strong lemon flavor, unless I overdid it lemon-ing on a Hefe. The website calls it a session beer, but I don’t know. If there is a hops bitterness, I miss it because it gets slammed by lemon tanginess.

I like scotch ales.

I don’t like buying a six-pack of rancid scotch ale that tastes like someone barfed lemons into a Mr. Beer.

I really like the Sam Adams Scotch Ale so I was expecting to enjoy the Brau Brothers version as well. This beer tasted nothing like I was expecting. It is very tart and fruity and I have a hard time tasting any smoky malt. As some people complained about the previous Brau Brothers beer I think it’s possible I got a bad batch. I have a sixer so I’ll update this post if the others are better. I’m starting to really dislike Brau Brothers beers.

Very much malt. I don’t have a good bench mark for what a scotch ale should taste like, but I’d guess this is pretty accurate. I think it’s the peat-smoked malt they mention on the label that’s giving me the smoky taste. I was pretty disgusted to find peat-smoked malt described as “medicinal/bandaid-like” when I googled it. Yuck, if I ever taste bandaid in my beer I promise that I’ll dump it down the drain. On second thought maybe this is a good beer to have out when playing softball to pour on someone’s fresh scrape. When they start screaming at you, you’d reply “What?! It contains peat-smoked malt which is medicinal/bandaid like!!”

I guess when I saw “Belgian” I expected it to be a little sweet. It’s not really, but it certainly is crisp. Nice, neat finish.

I usually reserve beers I really like to be consumed alone, and stuff I could take or leave I’ll eat with food. This finds a nice spot in the middle. I had it with pizza, but it was flavorful enough to stand up for itself without taking away from either the eating or the drinking experience.

I’m a little late here, as last week the local beer to be had was Belikin.

I’m OK with the Frame Straightener. It tasted pretty good- I like fruity and yeasty- but I like more body and more finish (broken record). I put it in my mouth, I tasted something in there, then it was gone. Did I even swallow it? I think so, but I can’t be sure.

On the other hand, the Belikin Stout was surprisingly tasty. I’d give it four stars.

I’m apt to enjoy Brau beer simply because it’s may be the only beer available at the Morris, MN liquor store that doesn’t come in a 30-pack cube. The price is absurdly cheap to boot. Frame Straightener was a nice beer with some sweet flavor and the feel of a homebrew. Unlike some homebrews that leave you feeling like you just drank a whole meal, it did feel like I could have more than one.
