That about sums it up. A solid porter that is a lot lighter in body than it looks. Good flavor and aroma. I like it.

I, too, was a bit confused at the selections included in the sampler. Lord knows I would’ve liked to see the Oatmeal Stout and/or the Porter in the mix. Something to think about, Summit.

Man this is a solid solid beer. I know it’s good, but I’m always surprised as how good, and how consistently good.

And Rett, I couldnt agree more about the winter sampler: I skipped it because it didn’t have the porter.

Summit northern porter is filled with wonderful! I grabbed one after work and couldn’t wait to pour a beer after getting home. Maybe it is just getting extra props for being picked at the start of the cold season, but I am really enjoying this beer even while writing this post. I think the beer could use a little more body, I’m a fan of how guinness tastes like a meal and feel like that is more how a winter beer should be which is why it lost half a star. I dont even know if a porter is supposed to be a winter beer, it just tastes like one but light and smooth as well. The smoky flavor it has is great as well, this is a perfect beer for just chillin and enjoying beer.

This porter has a nice black color, excellent bitter coffee aroma however not much head (at least pouring it from a bottle to a glass). The flavor mirrors the aroma and is very flavorful upfront, finishing clean. Porters can be pretty hit or miss in my book ranging from a beer that is dark in color but weak in flavor to ones you’d almost mistake for a stout. Summit’s version is a nice, solid porter that I think I’m enjoying more this year than in the past.

how is this not in the Winter sampler?

I was over in the Midway yesterday, my old stomping grounds, so I went to Big Top to pick up the Summit Porter. I ended up getting a 12 pack only because it was a better value than the 6 pack ($10.99/12 vs. $7.99/6) and the Winter sampler pack only had Winter Ale, Extra Pale Ale, Extra Special Bitter, and India Pale Ale. Maybe it’s just me but I totally think the Porter should be in there instead of the EPA.

Well, not a big deal that I got a 12-pack since the Porter kicks ass. I’m on number 2 right now, and I’m really enjoying the chocolatey coffee flavors and the sweet finish. Seems like the perfect way to start off what’s gonna be a long winter.
