Specialty Grain Description
Any beer made with a specialty grain (rye, oats, flax, buckwheat, etc) wherein the grain plays a major role in the character of the beer. So a really hoppy IPA with some rye would still be an IPA, but a German roggenbier would be Specialty Grain. Unlike reading Salinger in high school (when I never read anything) I liked this beer. It has the bite of an IPA minus any citrus notes. In its place is a nice roasted grain flavor that I can logically deduce is the rye. Make the trip and check this out - especially for three bucks during happy hour.
Josh says A Great Beer for a Rock Bottom Price

Given the name of this brew and without any information on what type of beer it was, I wasn’t sure what to expect last night when we tried out the new Rock Bottom creation. One good tip for putting the reviewer’s mind in the right place is to give the beer away for free. Good call Rock Bottom.
I really liked this beer since it is very similar to an IPA (a style I always enjoy) but it adds the unique rye taste that sets it apart from the rest. I will definitely have another one on my next trip to Rock Bottom but I won’t try to fight the traffic to get there before 6:00.

So I met up with some other Brew52′ers tonight at Rock Bottom to try the ‘Catcher in the Rye’ ale that was being tapped with the help of Mike Redmond, Twins catcher. I didn’t really see Redmond anywhere, but I’ll take their word that he was there.
The beer was great, it tasted a lot like an IPA but with that dry rye aftertaste, and you can’t beat the fact that it was free. To top it off, when the brewmaster announced the beer, he finished his little speech by downing an entire pint in one swill. Awesome.
Rett says Tapping Tonight

Had a great time at Rock Bottom tonight. Ben, Josh, and I got there early enough to have a beer before the tapping. I had the IPA which is pretty intense, so my taste buds were somewhat shot when we got the try the Catcher in the Rye Pale Ale, but it was nice. Similar to the IPA, but less hoppy, which means I liked it a bit less. Although as I’m typing this there’s a commercial on tv for Bud Lite Lime, which really puts things in perspective for me.
I also think it’s worth pointing out that it was super nice of Rock Bottom to give out free pints to everyone in the bar. Plus, they weren’t jerks about the happy hour. Where some bars quit 15 minutes early Rock Bottom was nice enough to honor the cheap drinks and appetizers right up until the last minute.
Only weird thing for me is that they don’t list their beers anywhere on their site that I can find, plus they didn’t have any description of the Catcher in the Rye Pale Ale except for a sheet hanging above the urinals. When I asked the waitress if they had any extras she looked really confused. I warned her that my other option was snagging one from the bathroom.
