A Superior Oatmeal Stout

I like my beers dark and roasty and coffee-y, so it comes as no surprise that I love the Oatmeal Stout. I’ve had many oatmeal stouts from a number of breweries, and the Lake Superior offering is right up there among the tops.

I have very little to say about it other than that it is a great beer for those whose likings are a little on the dark side. This beer has been a fairly regular selection for my home refrigerator. I’m heading to Duluth tonight, and hope to find this on tap at some local watering holes.

The oatmeal stout from Lake Superior has a ‘thick’ taste I think. Its pretty good, I would compare it to a brown ale almost, a dark brown ale. What I liked better about this beer than other brown ales was that it had more carbonation. I don’t really care for beers like Newcastle because they taste a little flat.

Way too expensive!

One of the better brews from Lake Superior. Nice hints of coffee while not being overpowering. Not much head out of the bottle that I would like to see from an oatmeal stout. Since I am reviewing the total beer package at almost $10.00 a 6 pack I would expect this to knock my socks off. There are much better local beers out there at a better price point.

It was ok though to drink beer with breakfast cause it was past nine and boy was it good. Great full beer that doesn’t over power. I don’t know my oatmeal stouts, I have maybe tried one other, this one makes me quite excited to try more.

The Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout tastes a lot like my favorite oatmeal stout from Goose Island. Maybe its the proximity to a great lake that makes a good oatmeal stout. I love the coffee malts giving the beer a very full flavor. This beer is smooth, easy to drink and definitely one of my favorites.

I can officially say it’s easily my favorite Lake Superior, and I haven’t even officially sampled this week’s supply. Awesome beer that makes me want to eat pancakes.

Sir Duluth is pretty much everything I’m looking for in an oatmeal stout. It’s full-bodied and flavorful, and it fits perfectly into my left hand as my right hand is frying up a mess of veggies on the stove. Later, after I’ve had a few more, its warm buzz dulls the sound of the domestic happening three doors down as a stand out on my deck peering up at the stars.

Nice. Very nice.

Sir Duluth is one smooth Mr. (shut yer mouth!)

So I feel like I’ve been harshing on my boys from Lake Superior a little bit, if only to myself. Their barleywine just didn’t measure up, and their red has disappointed way too many times.

But wow, their Oatmeal Stout is fantastic. The chocolate malts seem to hit me first, followed by a little sourness perhaps, and a nice malty finish. Smooth. I burnt through a bunch of stouts this winter, mainly imperial ones, but I wish this woulda been in my rotation. Nice job, LS!

Ok, truth be told I’m only writing this review because the page throws a bunch of errors when there aren’t any reviews. So I plan to retaste this beer on Saturday when the wife and I get back from our vacation in San Antonio. I remember really liking this beer. We had a sampler pack when we went snowboarding at Lutsen a few months ago, and the Oatmeal Stout was my favorite. So with that distant memory, I’ll give it a solid 4.
